What So Not

For Chris Emerson, aka What So Not, the past year has been one of rethinking and renewal. Even before the pandemic, the Australian producer decided to scale back touring in 2020 to recentre himself personally and creatively.

“I had to get out of the cycle of the touring artist life where you feel like you’re forever chasing your tail,” says Emerson from Perth. He wanted to step out of his own “machine,” reconnect with what’s emerging, and support younger artists as others once supported him.

Despite more than a billion global streams, an award-winning single (“Beautiful” feat. Winona Oak), and multiple Gold records, Emerson chose to reset. He spent a year at a beach house in Newcastle with a dozen creatives across visual art, design, and music, experimenting with new genres, techniques, and gear while soaking up books, films, performances, and interviews.

The first result is “The Change,” featuring Australian indie rockers DMA’s—an energizing track with roots in ’90s Britpop and electronica, updated with modern breakbeats and production. Co-written with DMA’s Johnny Took, the song fused Took’s band-world sensibilities and love of acts like Underworld and The Chemical Brothers with Emerson’s technical sound design. “Individually we didn’t have the right attributes to get it there,” says Emerson. “Together, it was the perfect combination.”

“The Change” ushers in What So Not’s second decade, following collaborations with Skrillex, RL Grime, Toto, Run the Jewels, and more, plus performances in over 70 countries and major festival slots. With this new phase, Emerson signals another evolution in his ever-shifting sound.
